Essex has nearly four hundred years of history to explore from its first period houses to the collections of photos and artifacts at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum from the days when Essex "ruled the seas" with wooden, two masted schooners. One of America's finest folk art collections graces the rooms of Cogswell's Grant just a half mile outside the Village Center.

Essex Historical Society
and Shipbuilding Museum The Essex Shipbuilding Museum tells the extraordinary story of a small New England village that built more two-masted wooden fishing schooners than any other place in the world. Shipbuilding in Essex began before 1668. By 1849 as many as 15 shipyards were producing over 50 vessels a year. By 1937 more than 4,000 wooden vessels had been launched from the banks of the Essex River.
