Essex has nearly four hundred years of history to explore from its first period houses to the collections of photos and artifacts at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum from the days when Essex "ruled the seas" with wooden, two masted schooners. One of America's finest folk art collections graces the rooms of Cogswell's Grant just a half mile outside the Village Center.

Have some fun and adventure kayaking the Essex River and the Great Marsh. Get some exercise with a round of golf.

If you want someone else to do all the work, take a ride on the Essex River Queen and sit back with food and beverage and listen to your guided tour as the fresh, salt air breezes by. A sunset cruise will light up your soul.

Spend a day leisurely walking the spectacular open spaces at the Cox Reservation, Stavros Reservation, Cogswell's Grant and the Manchester Essex Woods. Every season changes the landscape.

If you love antiques, Cogswell’s Grant should be on your itinerary. This 18th century farmhouse overlooking the Essex River was the summer home of collectors Bertram and Nina Fletcher Little, and is now a museum which houses their celebrated collection of American folk art.

Essex Historical Society
and Shipbuilding Museum

The Essex Shipbuilding Museum tells the extraordinary story of a small New England village that built more two-masted wooden fishing schooners than any other place in the world. Shipbuilding in Essex began before 1668. By 1849 as many as 15 shipyards were producing over 50 vessels a year. By 1937 more than 4,000 wooden vessels had been launched from the banks of the Essex River.
